generally there are two types of companies
1. product based in which the company itself develop the projects or the application and provide them directly to the market. such company as Microsoft come under this where they provide there own software made by the company itself.
2. service based in which the company undertakes the needs or the requirements of the other company whether big or small, and develop the product accordingly for their need. companies such as tech mahindra, cognizant etc come under this where they have the client requirement and they make or develop product for them.

For a product based company, installation of the final product is done at client's place, whereas for service based company, deployment is done at the client's place.

Product Based companies uses COTS (Commercial of the shelf). It develops a product and can be used uniquely by all the users.
Service Based Companies uses MOTS (Modified of the shelf). It designs and develops a product based on the client environment.

In service based company the software development is for a single client mostly. That means there are specific requirements that customer wants. There are SMEs with services companies who know the client enough to understand what they say and then translate that to developers. Developers make sure customer can use the software like they desire.

In product companies, the focus is to develop software to be as configurable as possible. So that it can be used by it's variety of customers almost out of box. There would be dedicated product managers who look at customer requirements and plan a roadmap for the next set of features to be built it into products.

IT-Focused Projects.New Opportunity and Strategy Projects. Operations Focused Projects.
These types of projects are often about changing the way people perform their roles. They can also involve updating the current IT systems. Or they can be a combination of both.

In general there are 2 Types of IT Companies and Projects :-

a) Product Development IT Companies :- In Product-Development IT companies, IT company will have the concept of the product and they invest time & money to build the product and the IT company initiates the development of the product & it is the owner of the developed product. It will sell the same product to multiple customers with required customizations for each customer.
Example of such companies are :- Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, SAP, CRM
The Role of a Business Analyst in such a Product development IT company, is to understand the product features, understand the product domain and where the product fits in the domain and understand the Client's requirements and to analyse what customizations are required to be made to make the product suit the client's requirements.

b) Application Development IT Companies :- In Application-Development IT companies, Client will have a requirement and will engage an IT Company to develop an IT application. Client initiates the development and Client is the owner of the developed application. Client will be the only customer for this application and Deployment will be done at the Clients place.
Example of such companies are :-Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Satyam
The Role of a Business Analyst in such a Application-development IT company, is to understand the Client Industry, domain and to understand the Client requirements.
